Eligibility
Anyone age 13 and older who is no longer eligible to play Majors baseball can work as a VLL umpire (12-year-olds who have aged out of Majors may be considered for umpire roles if they work with a parent). Note: We are in particular need of adults to work our highest levels of baseball.
Schedule
There is no mandatory schedule for VLL umpires. You select the days you want to work, and there is no minimum. We are happy to work around the schedules of travel players, JV/Varsity players, and people with other activities.
Typically, new hires work primarily on Minors games.
The full VLL game schedule is available here.
Pay
VLL uses an online scheduling and direct deposit software program (Stack Officials) to assign and pay umpires. All new umpires must follow the directions that will be provided in a separate email to ensure they are paid for their work.
Our current pay schedule is among the highest for officiating any youth sports in Northern Virginia:
- Majors: $55 plate/ $45 bases
- Minors: $40 plate and bases
There may be opportunities, such as the tournament play (i.e., end-of-season playoffs), where minors umpires are paid a higher rate.
In the spring, we offer an incentive program for those who umpire more games. Anyone who umpires 8 or more games in a season will receive a $100 end-of-season bonus.
Equipment
VLL provides all the equipment needed to begin umpiring, including a uniform. No additional purchases are necessary.
